Got mine the day it spawned, a common. Got the Zookeeper achievement.  I waited for the crowds to go down before I farmed for a rare, it wouldnt be fair otherwise.  When I found a non rare I shouted or wispered a ramdom player to come and take it off me as didnt want to be gready.  In the end loads spawned and it seemed only peeps around were those wanting a rare.  A little bit of patience and plenty of mining in between I finally got my rare  :)

Finally got my rare.  I had to swap to horde and keep killing critters in undercity.  Too a long time but I got my rare.  Yippee

Ive collected almost every pet so now changing them into rares.  I got a rare on the first one.  Result  :)

I went round and round Silithus for ages, they came common or uncommon no problems but no rare.  Finally went into the ruins and found some sidewinders.  They were one pet battles so it was easy to kill those and wait for a respawn.  It worked!!  Got my rare.
