Using a macro from wowhead comments about the 3 quests, I checked each of my characters and discovered that most had done 1 of the 3 quest chains. Only one character had done 2 of the quest chains. The Hinterlands drop rate seems horrible. Tanaris may not be bad, but it is so full of PvP these days, it's hard to quest.  Luckily, my druid only needed the Feralas quest chain and got the drop in the Yeti caves - probably the 20th yeti killed.  Not too bad after using the macro.

Decided to try to fish this guy up today rather than buy at AH and here are my results so far:

249 successful casts resulting primarily in fish but I did get a small number of casts resulting in objects other than fish. I wish I had checked the timing of these alternate catches (like 1 every "x" number of catches).  The alternate catches:

5 Curious Crate 

6 Inscribed Scrollcases

1 Goldenscale Vendorfish

4 Mote of water catches

Decided to try getting this one today and after about 100 normal Quivering Filth, and 6 elite Quivering Filth, this guy dropped on my 7th elite.  Took about an hour. Tried for another 45 mins and didn't get another. As a true pet battler, I did it all with my Safari Hat on!  I love that it comes from a Half Empty Food Container!

PS: Favorite place to farm to avoid the filthmongers and pull lots of mobs is 50,80. Then a quick check around the pond to be sure no elites spawned elsewhere.

After checking 3 servers every day since it became available, I finally found one!  Poor quality, but P/P breed. I have been saving a stone for this purpose, so I now have a rare P/P Guardling. Caught it at 48,11, on the side of the stairs leading up to the entrance of AQ40 - it spawned as I was running by. I will say that I thought it was going to be easier on a pve server, however I actually caught it at 12:45pm EST on a heavily pvp/crz server. It just happened that no one was around!

So I am hunting for a rare for my collection and I have noticed that they tend to be up earlier in the day and along with Fluxfire Feline. On my server, it is an over abundance of Fluxfires, but there are usually a few roaches. They are also around the undeground entrance to Gnomer. Noticed that once I battle or kill them, they don't seem to spawn very quickly. Evening logins find very few paws at all. UPDATE...got mine right after maintenance today!

I was almost resigned to stoning my (long-ago caught) uncommon to make it rare, but I decided to give it a couple more tries yesterday and today to catch a rare. Yesterday and off and on today, I saw all qualities as both primary and secondary pets to the ones around Thundermar and Kirthaven (mostly secondary to the turkey, skunk and squirrel). Then my 4th primary at Thundermar (6th primary overall) was finally rare! I am not sure of the spawn times as a primary, but it seemed random. 

Found my rare right outside of Uldaman cave entrance in Badlands.  It was paired with a rare black rat as well.  There were 3 battleable pets in this area (right near the wooden cliff walls) @ 42,10.  One was un-battleable, I think because it was stuck behind the wood.  The other two were fine and one was my rare!  I searched for days off and on in Tanaris and it took just 30 mins in Badlands.  It happens a lot to me like that...see my comments on "Chicken" too.

I'm with the last post. It is taking me forever to find a rare of these guys. I have made 2 or 3 passes of all of Uldum, hoping to get one as a primary or secondary pet, but I have not seen a single rare. Now I am focusing on all pets  in the spawn zone around the river(s). I'm hoping that by posting here, it will somehow provide me with luck. Will update when there is a change.

Update...7 mins later, I have my rare!

Ahhh, I found a rare and as I was changing out pets to be sure I could capture it, a Redridge Fox killed it.  :(  I'm currently waiting to see if it will respawn in the same general area soon. Will update if so.

Well, one did a little bit away in 5 mins. Not the same breed, level or combo pet, but this was better!  1st was a level 6 B/B rare with an uncommon to battle.  The one I caught was level 4 S/S rare.  No other pet to battle.  Thx Redridge Fox!!

Finally found a rare in Elwynn Forest, breed S/S.  I've been looking everywhere for a rare, but especially in Howling Fjord's Westguard Keep and Duskwood and only found uncommon or lower qualities.  I tried for about 30 mins yesterday and the same today in Elwynn Forest at Eastvale Logging Camp and finally got my rare.  Not sure if it is better spawn percentages in Elwynn or if I just got lucky today, but I'm happy! 

Over an hour and a half of engaging and checking all Little Black Rams for a rare finally proved worthwhile. Got mine at 70,79. I searched from 10pm ST to 11:30pm and the rams were plentiful. By the time I finished a full circuit around the zone, the starting area ones had respawned. I used "/tar little" to engage the ones in trees when I could and when I couldn't engage them or the ones in tiny valleys, I killed them to make them respawn. Also saw 2 rare roaches along the way.

Found the only rare (out of probably at least 50 direct battles or checks on Crimson Geodes) and it almost died.  Took itself down to 6 health and I caught it.  Phew!  It was a H/H.  I found it in Halcyon Egress, which had no mobs and no other players around.  I'm not sure if I was phased or what, but I had the place to myself with no interruptions.  (Unlike searching for them in Crimson Expanse, which has creatures and players all over.) 

I agree with the previous poster.  Tons of these and the amethyst ones in the Fungal Deep inside the cave at Verlok Stand.  I found a rare of this and the amethyst within 1 min of each other.  

There are also Crimson Geodes in here, but I have yet to see a rare one here or anywhere for that matter.

Just found 2 rare in the Dens in about a 5 min time frame.  I got one in the first spawned group.  I battled them all and decided to see what other rares I could get in the area after reading the posts here.  In the second group of spawns I found another rare Grotto Vole. The one I captured was breed S/S, the second was H/B.

Update: Found another about a min after I posted this.  I guess in this case, "rares" are pretty common.

Another update: Got a rare Carrion Rat here too!

Got an uncommon a while back and I came back today to try for a rare.  Took about 20-25 mins of farming and I finally got a P/P rare at 38, 50.  I saw many "mothers" and only killed or battled the babies.  I only killed one "mother" due to aggro and all the hatchlings kept spawning after I defeated or killed them. 

The same "mother" spawned a new hatchling about 5-10 mins after I got my rare.

These guys really take a long time to respawn. If you have a list or map of the spawn points, you will find a coral snake at each one. But only about 1/4 to 1/2 of them are battle pets. I battled or killed every coral snake that I saw at each spawn point (unless uncommon quality) and they would not respawn as battle pets. They kept respawning as regular level 1 critters. Finally on my 3rd trip around points, I found a new battle-able coral snake and it was a rare! At 61,59  

Was looking for a rare coral snake and realized I was missing a rare venomspitter so while waiting for the snakes to respawn,  I decided to try for a venomspitter. On my 4th one, it was a rare (B/B). There were tons in the area and I bet if I kept looking I could have found a better breed rare, but I'll level this one and see if I decide I need better later on. Now to go back to waiting for the coral snakes to respawn...

Got my rare in Sargeron after about 30 mins of looking.  If anyone is battling a rare and all your pets die, don't worry, the pet respawns.  This just happened to me on this fight and thankfully the rare respawned right after my pets died and I was able to change out for slightly higher level pets to capture this guy.  In terms of color changing, mine has yet to differ from the image in my pet book (Green with some aqua). I'll keep checking though.

Got 2 poors a while back and am searching for anything better.  I did one trip around the spawn points, saw none at all.  I'll try a few more times and then I think I'll give in and use a stone (whenever I get one).  Will update when I make a decision.
